Traffic Architect Road Editing: Delete, Upgrade or Reconnect

November 3, 2026 · Demo 1.0.7/1.0.8 tools; full 1.1.0 fixes noted

The short answer

In Traffic Architect, use Delete/X for demolition and the road upgrade/conversion operation to change road class. The early Demo notes call the partial edit Ctrl with Upgrade, affecting the nearest end; 1.0.7 documents dragging Convert across roads. If a road cannot be joined back into one piece, an adjacent turn lane may prevent its pieces from rejoining. The developer suggests removing that lane with the turn-lane tool before retrying; this is a conditional attempt, not a guaranteed fix.

Choose the edit you actually need

Your goalDocumented operationCheck before committing
Remove a roadDelete demolishes, like X.The target is the unwanted road, rather than a useful adjacent section.
Change the road classUse the road upgrade/conversion operation; the updates use Upgrade and Convert wording. The preview covers the intended road.
Change only one endHold Ctrl with Upgrade; it affects the end nearest the cursor. You are pointing at the end you want, not assuming a freehand two-point selection.
Convert several roads in one passDrag Convert across them.Every road crossed by the sweep is one you intend to convert.

Use the label and preview shown by your build. The updates document these operations but do not establish that every version presents Upgrade and Convert as two separate buttons. Auto Bend and Arc are separate full-version tools outside this guide.

Make one controlled change while paused

  1. Keep a save you can return to, then pause before experimenting with the junction.
  2. Choose the intended operation from the table and inspect its target or preview.
  3. Make one small change. For a swept conversion, avoid crossing unrelated roads.
  4. Check the road shape, its ends and nearby junctions before continuing the simulation.
  5. If that eligible build or purchase is wrong, use Ctrl+Z while still paused. The refund tag beside the balance shows the amount currently available to return.

The 1.0.7 notes say converting a road and converting it back during the same pause returns the money. They do not promise an unlimited refund of changes made before the simulation ran.

“This road can’t be joined back into one piece here”

The developer’s October 30 explanation links this message to turn lanes. A turn lane splits a road into pieces; deleting or upgrading first tries to join those pieces back together. If that reconstruction fails, the game refuses the edit instead of leaving a partly changed road.

  1. Read the exact warning. This branch applies to the rejoin message, rather than every red preview.
  2. Inspect the affected road and adjacent turn lanes.
  3. Use the turn-lane tool to remove a potentially conflicting adjacent turn lane, as the developer suggests.
  4. Retry the original delete or upgrade once, then inspect the resulting geometry.

Deleting a no-turn sign or pressing Reset junction is a different operation: it changes permitted movements rather than removing the physical extra lane. Use the turn-controls guide if those tools are being confused.

What the newer versions change

Version/sourceRelevant changeWhat it does not establish
Demo 1.0.7Rejects a turn-lane edit that cannot rejoin the road, instead of leaving broken pieces.Every later rejoin refusal has disappeared.
1.0.8 recapTurn lanes are retained during road upgrades; signal settings are preserved for specified edits. The October 30 road-lock report has a universal cure.
Full 1.1.0, released November 3Fixes unupgradable pieces after a short partial upgrade, allows upgrades of short bridge-adjacent pieces, and reduces turn-lane refusals with better explanations. The Demo has received the same build, or every saved road-lock case was tested.

Check whether you launched the Demo or full game and note your displayed version. For the full release, update before assuming that an old short-piece defect is still present.

If the edit is still refused

Stop treating the adjacent-turn-lane attempt as a guaranteed repair. Keep the exact error, a screenshot with the affected road hovered, your save, version and operating system. The developer requested those details to cover the particular case. The fresh November 3 follow-up identifies the original report as the Demo on a Mac; it does not report that the workaround succeeded.

On Windows, that developer reply locates saves under %APPDATA%\TrafficArchitect\saves\, using TrafficArchitectDemo for the Demo. It does not supply a Mac save path. Do not overwrite your only working save to demonstrate the issue.

The operation is complete when the intended road can be edited, its ends and adjoining junctions remain connected as intended, and the preview or rejoin warning no longer blocks that change. If the warning remains, retain the evidence above rather than marking the problem solved.
